Overtones exist in every sound in nature. They form the basis for our scales and music. Everyone has access to overtones through our own voices. Instructor Neel Murgai will lead participants in Siberian/Mongolian techniques, more accessible techniques based on vowel sounds, as well as polyphonic overtone singing. We will also dive into a general scientific and mathematic understanding on the nature of overtones. This series of 2 hour long classes offers the time and opportunity to first learn to hear the overtones happening in all our voices and then learn to manipulate them. Neel has been practicing overtone singing for 16 years, which he learned from the performance group Uragsha and from Timothy Hill of the Harmonic Choir. He is also a sitarist and co-founder of the Brooklyn Raga Massive. Stay at Jalopy for BRM’s Weekly Concert and Jam Session every Thursday after the class.
